Essence Festival 2017| Growing Your Business With Essence

This year I attended Essence Fest and it was truly an event to remember! I was invited to attend Essence as a vendor and I traveled along with Shop Zuvaa the African Inspired clothing company that hosts African designers from all over the world to sell their products through Zuvaa Marketplace. I packed up my paintings and my husband and I embarked on an 8 hour drive to New Orleans to experience Essence Fest for the first time. Of course I took notes of everything I learned, things that inspired me, and market research regarding products and art. Please keep reading if your interested!

What Essence Did For My Business?

1. Worldwide Exposure

Essence is the destination for black women looking to enjoy some time with their girlfriends, eat as much cajun food as you can handle, and shop, shop, and shop some more! People traveled from everywhere to be at the event. I met women from Paris, Jamaica, Canada, and Los Angeles looking to purchase creative pieces of art and wearable art for their homes and bodies! I set up shop in the One Canal Shops at Essence Fest with Zuvaa. The Convention Center was about 2 blocks away from the popup shop I was vending at. We received plenty of traffic because we were on one of the hottest food strips in the area. The exposure I received just from being at the event was unimaginable for me as a small business owner. Social media is great but it doesn't compare to the face to face interaction you get from your clients in person. I made some amazing connections, I got to talk to other creative small business owners, and most of all I got to enjoy the event with people nationwide!

2. Client Feedback | Face to Face Contact

In addition to meeting amazing people from all over the world I received amazing feedback about my pieces. New clients got to touch the products and hear from me first hand why I created the pieces, the inspiration behind my art and style, and why I decided to create Poetically Illustrated. Now I get to do this at my local shows and this is also amazing, but getting to hear from people I wouldn't otherwise have face to face contact with is truly humbling. People who have been following my art since college, or my first post about leaving my job to pursue my passion full time got to see my products first hand. They got to hear my journey and we got to build a relationship. I was also pleased to network with other small business owners, we've planned and scheduled collaborations and events to host together later this year and next year! Essence was truly an eye opening and humbling experience for me.

3. Marketing, Promo, Staging

Everything at Essence Pops out at you! At the Convention Center where the vendors are setup there is a pool of vibrant colors, fabrics, art, hair, natural products, and more! The major sponsors like Creme of Nature, Ford, As I Am, McDonald's, etc. have huge setups and screens that grab your attention. There are tons of free giveaways, amazing food, and connections being made. I took note of things the big businesses did to draw in a crowd as well as the small businesses who were slaying there booths. I noticed that everyone was going big or going home! They brought there A game, the best products, the best assistants to help draw in the crowd, the entertainment, the live streaming, and social media posts to ensure you stayed connected with your customers. Some vendors were hosting celebrity talks, others were hosting there own giveaways, or passing out coupons and cards to those looking in and not stopping. These are all things that have inspired my booth setup for next year! I can't wait for you guys to see it!

4. Collaborations + Sponsors

Many of the sponsors of Essence Fest also sponsored creative businesses as well. Offering the products of small businesses as back drops for photoshoots, art printed on free tote bags, free product stuffed inside bags, small business shout outs and free hairstyles, and dance battles! The list goes on! Many startup companies were featured and sponsored to speak on panels about black business as well as health, prosperity, and inspiration from celebrities to keep pushing for there dreams. I took notes on what I heard and saw, I'm speaking with brands, pitching, and brainstorming on how I can contribute to their setups next year and how they can contribute to mine. This event shows you that the sky is not the limit. Anything you can think in your mind, create with your body, its possible with dedication, perseverance, and patience!

5. Boost in Sales

The last benefit I will cover is my boost in sales. Yes, I sold alot of product at the Essence Fest Popup! I cherish the connections I made more than the money because these are lifelong relationships that I am building with fellow business owners and clients who really enjoy putting my work in their homes and offices. But yes I received a boost in my website views, social media following, and my shop salels+commission work. Profiting from your passion is always a great feeling. I prayed specific prayers into the universe this year for my business and I am so thankful that they are coming to light! Essence brought me over 200 page views per day which is still holding on even a week after the event. I sold out of product just by walking the New Orleans strips holding or wearing my art. I made amazing connections with business partners which will allow me to travel and spread my work even more. I'm so grateful for the experience! I know next year when i'm actually set up in the Convention Center I will be sponsored and I will foster even more new clients and career opportunities for Poetically Illustrated.

2017 New Years Resolutions (For Artists and Entrepreneurs)

So it's 2017 and you have either made the plunge into a career as a full-time artist, creator, or entrepreneur. Or, you are still contemplating if you want to leave your stable job to pursue a dream that includes financial uncertainty. Either way you are setting your goals and yearly resolutions and planning how you are going to go about executing them. Well i'm here to help you out a little. Here's a list of 2017 New Year's Resolutions for Creative Entrepreneurs! I hope this helps!


Every career should have a consistent networking schedule. Whether you start locally or online it is important to talk to the people who inspire you, the people who are making strides to fulfill their dreams and connect with them. Build real lasting relationships. You never know who you could meet at the network after work mixer or the local art galleries! Surrounding yourself with like minded and driven individuals can have a lasting affect! Plus you get to make new friends!


Ok, so I know this is very general and you see this every where. And i'm not just talking about consistently posting on your social media or consistently creating product. Those things are very important, but I am speaking towards everything! Be consistent with your work schedule. If you are going to create your blog content on Sundays and post on Monday and Wednesday honor the commitment you set. If you are going to focus on marketing and promotion on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 4 hours, just do it. Don't let yourself lose focus!

3. INVEST IN YOURSELF (and your business)

Create a Business Plan complete with a budget and expenses. (Download my free Business Plan for Creative Entrepreneurs Here). No matter how big or small. Be sure to include enough for at least one workshop to help you learn a new skill towards creating your products or building your business. Dedicate a certain amount of time per week to work on a skill you would like to be better at. Don't go cheap on those supplies you need, save the money, raise the money, earn the money to get quality professional materials. Always take the time you need to clear your mind and relieve stress so you don't over think everything!


Create an event and you be the host! Whether its a fashion show, art show, pop up, or networking event you should get out of your shell and introduce yourself to your city. Meet people like you or people who admire your work. This is the age of social media and you never know who is watching you and wishing they knew you. Attend events as a vendor, submit your work for group shows or set up a booth at the local art fair. This goes along with networking but its also a great way to let people know who you are and what your doing so you can create a client base.


No matter what, never give up! Being in business for yourself gets hard, your savings will run out, sometimes your sales will be amazing and sometimes you will feel like no one knows you exist. You have to keep working. Keep believing in yourself and keep building your network, creating your work, and taking advantage of every opportunity that fits your craft and business. You can do it!!!

Raw Nashville Art&Fashion Show-Trend

I had the pleasure of showing my work with Raw Nashville at The City Winery in Nashville on June 28th! Summer "16"!

Today I want to tell you guys my experience with Raw, the pros and cons, what I wish I had known, and what we all would like to know... Did you sell anything?

So lets get to it shall we?...

My Experience with Raw Nashville

Personally for me Raw was an amazing experience! We had a meet and greet one month prior to the show to go over details such as arrival times, performance times, what we were expected to bring, what was being provided, parking, ticket sales, and the venues rules.

The meet and greet was fun! I met some great artists we exchanged tips and tricks for creating and selling art! Some of us will actually be collaborating later this year! 

The Raw staff was absolutely amazing with answering any questions and helping us set up our booths to help captivate the audience. I felt that everything was coordinated pretty well there were a few bumps but that is to be expected I won't deduct any points for it!

I definitely recommend Raw for emerging and seasoned artists! Its great for networking and meeting artists of different crafts as well as locating your clients, discovering who is interested in your work and why! I got to speak with a lot of people about my work regarding what they liked and how I could improve and that is always amazing!!! So overall my experience was amazing and I will definitely be showing with them again!

Pros and Cons

Pros would have to be the massive amount of exposure! So many people attended the event and they were actually interested in the art and willing to purchase and give feedback which was amazing!

Another Pro is connecting with other creative people who share the same interests as you do! That is always a plus and helps you build a creative community around you filled with people who support you and will critique your work honestly! I mean what more could an artsy girl ask for?

Cons??? There were a few and I mean very few!! So few I only have one which would be hanging space. I felt a little deceived regarding the hanging space and the walls we were given to hang the work on. We had a few incidents with the walls falling over prior to the show because we were sharing the walls. By sharing I mean we had wire wall racks and you had one side and another artist had the other. If the other artist happened to have work that was heavier than yours you ran the risk of having your display wall tumble down. Some artists got lucky and they were given spaces along the actual wall so they could create a small pop up like space! Which I loved by the way!!


What I Wish I Had Done-Notes for Future Shows

So these may be a given for you guys because some of you are pros but for me I'm still working on my career and I have only been full time since February and this was my first show so give me a break!!

Any who!! So my hubby and I took a little tour around the venue to see the other artists work and to network and socialize and of all that good stuff!! That's how I noticed these things and why I will never do another show without them!

Here's my list:

1. Contact List - Requesting names and emails for the clients visiting there booth! Why are contact lists great to have? You have direct information to reach clients who admire your work to market directly to those customers!

2. Social Media and Business Card Displayed- IN YOUR FACE!!!- Displaying social media information up close and personal for immediate access to your online profile in the event you are speaking to another client and the on lookers don't want to interrupt you! Also you get instant followers they follow you right then and there!!!

3. Prints and Smaller, Less Expensive Versions of Large Popular Pieces - Most artists had postcards, prints, and small canvas prints of there work on the table for purchase. I asked around and most of the items offered were super inexpensive starting as low as $10.00 and the prints were bagged with business cards and branded bags so the customer can find you easily should they want more work! And cheaper work that is also easy to purchase sales quicker than the large pieces no one wants to haul around all night!

4. Live Painting- Painting live is a great conversation starter! People are fascinated by the gift of creativity and they love to see you in the act! Also it helps pass time by! One of the artists actually set up her easel and paints to allow guests at her booth to paint on the painting! At the end of the night she had one beautiful abstract piece which she donated to Raw! Isn't that amazing?

5. Freebies- Small 4x5 art prints with candy or some cool trinket attached with a business card for the clients to take! Everyone visiting may not have come prepared to spend but having the option of free goody bags keeps me coming back and you have a refresher for them to keep your work fresh on their brain after the event is over! If you are giving a super cool crochet bracelet for free, every time you look at it you will remember where you got the bracelet and you will talk about it to friends and family when they ask! Am I right or am I right?

And Finally

Girl Did you Sell Anything?...

YES!!! I did!! I sold lots of prints from my shop linked above and I received 12 portrait orders all who actually purchased them! AND I was commissioned to do two very huge and expensive abstract pieces for a local interior designer. I was also invited to show my work at 3 events planned for the fall and I could not be more excited!! 

Raw Nashville opened doors for me and my small business! I am so grateful for the experience and I can't wait to show with them again in the future!
