The Artsy Friend

Are you considered to be the "Artsy Friend" of your group of friends?

The one they call to help decorate, do makeup or hair, paint a portrait or mural?

If the answer to any of those questions was yes then you are most definitely the "Artsy Friend". Which isn't a  bad thing! But what i've noticed since my switch to full time artist is my role as the "Artsy Friend" has some pros and cons.

For example, my friends and acquaintances look to me for assistance with all of their creative projects whether they are small or large. And whether we want to admit it or not any kind of exposure is good exposure for an artist! Your friends have friends who have family who have friends! Do you see where i'm going with this? This my friends, is a pro!

An example of a con in this scenario is your friends may not believe that your fun new job as the "Artsy Friend" is worth an investment.

The moral of this post is always know your worth and the worth of your work. Don't let family and friends have things for free because they hold a title in your life or because you carry the label as the "Artsy Friend". Art is an investment, and i'm sure if your friends were going into a creative field they would look to you for your investment in their dream so make sure you voice your needs.

I've participated in a few shows and events since leaving my job in February, and to my surprise my new acquaintances and friends have come to my rescue. I have voiced my dreams to both new and old friends and family but oddly enough the people who are learning their new "Artsy Friend" are more willing to lend a hand a show their support for my dreams!

So my message today is believe in yourself, write down your goals, be realistic about how you will achieve them and don't stop until you achieve every single one of them! Take it one step at a time, and never settle for less than you feel you deserve.
